Sometimes, professionals forget that their knowledge in regard to specific topics is not common knowledge. Speaking in industry terms is a great example of this. While knowledge is power, I believe in order to be truely good at whatever it is you do you must be able to teach the topic to others, thus, pass the knowledge, and the power, along. A website designer may know the limits of CSS and how far its usefulness can extend, but if he is unable to relate this information to someone, I believe his usefulness as a professional is limited.
In the spirit of this belief, I wanted to impart on my readers a brief tidbit of Search Engine Optimization knowledge. When you consider optimizing your website for search, you must consider how your clients or customers will try to find you. For instance, when a new website is placed online it is natural for the business owner to want their customers to find them by their business name. This results in most businesses wanting their brand or business name everywhere on their website, and the first thing people see when they load the page. While this is great, shouldn't the new business be looking for new clients and customers? After all, if someone already knows your business name it is likely that they can find you in the phone book, or they may already have your phone number. However, if a prospective client is searching for you it is highly likely that they don't even know your business exists, let alone your exact business name. This is why you may hear about big Search Engine competition over generic terms such as "real estate" or "new car." Because a prospective car buyer that knows what they want will search for exactly what they are looking for, but a prospective car buyer that doesn't know exactly what they want could end up buying any car.
Taking that same premise a bit further we can easily explain the importance of optimizing for local search. Let's take D'Haene Design for instance. Our primary city of service is Bellingham, Washington. So, if someone in Bellingham were to type "Website Designer" into Google, Yahoo, or Bing, they will end up with results for national (in most cases expensive) website design firms. If they are looking for someone local, and possibly less expsneive they may search for "Bellingham Website Design." This is the importance of optimizing for local search. While it would be great to be ranked number 1 in Google for the term "Website Design," there are a lot of website design firms spending a lot of money and putting in a lot of effort for that term. However, because Bellingham Website Design is a smaller market, there will be less competition and D'Haene Design will have a better chance of appearing higher in the search results.

This past week has been quite eventful for D'Haene Design in the arena of website design in Whatcom county. In addition to our normal web service workload we were contact by two local businessess, one in Blaine and the other in Ferndale, one in need of a new website, and the other in need of an updated website design.
The website for the company out of Blaine is very much a "rush to live" situation. And, I'm happy to report, we have met the customers expectations by delivering a complete website design within three days of request. Now, however, we are waiting on product media and copy to complete the website.
The website design for the company out of Ferndale is quite the opposite situation. Although the owner would like a finished product ASAP, he has placed the entire project in the hands of D'Haene Design and trusts the results he will obtain by working with us. And I, as the web designer for this particular project, am happy to report that the basic design mockup is complete. Although we are still a few days away from having a finished product, the feeling of having a project progress (through any stage) is a good one.
I look forward to having details for these websites added to D'Haene Design's portfolio as soon as the websites are live.
We have redesigned our website once again. We hope you like the new look and feel. Take a peek at our new Clients section to get an idea of the work we have done for others. Rest assured, we will do the same for you!
